The US has become more undisguised in its attempt to use the Phyongchang Olympic Games as a theatre of confrontation with the DPRK.
According to America's Newsweek magazine dated January 24, US Vice-President Pence said that he would participate in the Winter Olympics and keep “north Korea’s propaganda campaign” in check.
At the same time, a White House official also said that Pence would hold some news conferences before and during the games and he “has the decision to prevent the games from turning into a theatre of north Korea’s propaganda campaign for two days and nights”.
It is the reckless remark of the anti-reunification ringleader who wants to block in every way the trend towards inter-Korean fence-mending which was provided by the DPRK’s bold and proactive efforts and drive a wedge between Korean nationals.
The DPRK is very pleased with the great event of the fellow countrymen and wants the Winter Olympics in south Korea to be a good occasion for demonstrating the dignity and stamina of the Korean nation to the whole world, and this approach is winning warm welcome and support from the international community.
The DPRK’s efforts for improving inter-Korean relations have nothing to do with a “propaganda campaign” the US is arguing against.
The US, however, is fully revealing its true identity as the one that does not want reconciliation and cooperation of the Korean nation from its wild ambition for world domination.
On the eve of the Olympics the US is maximizing political and military threats to the DPRK and dispatching strategic assets including nuclear-powered carrier task groups and special commando units to the Korean peninsula while committing such vicious acts of slandering the sincerity of the DPRK and spoiling the atmosphere of rapprochement unhesitatingly.
The US acts of straining the situation trigger serious concern of the international community.
Chinese Hong Kong newspaper The South China Morning Post in an editorial on January 27 said the US is now doing only what it should not do and the timing of the recent US measures is very suspicious at the time when the north and south of Korea have resumed dialogue.
Constantine Kosachev, chairman of the International Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council, said that Americans act as if nothing has happened while continuously intensifying sanctions and pressure in league with their regional allies, and such moves which are based on a wrong analysis of the current situation will have an extremely dangerous impact on the development of the overall situation. “The positive development of the situation related to the start of direct dialogue between the two sides of Korea may disappear after the Winter Olympic Games due to the misbehaviour of the West,” he noted.
Facts clearly show once again who sincerely wants the successful holding of the Winter Olympics and peace and stability in the Korean peninsula and who is fanning the flames of escalated tension in the peninsula.
It is natural that the international community expresses concern over what the US vice-president said he would do against the DPRK while attending the Winter Olympic Games.
The US should refrain from rash acts.
What the US would gain is nothing but international isolation as it fails to see the trend of the times squarely.
