It was on April 13 when the Korean war was at its height.
On hearing that officials were making preparations for his birthday party, Supreme Commander Kim Il Sung summoned an official, and asked him why he had been to the village.
He answered honestly that he bought a hen and a bundle of eggs.
After a while, the Supreme Commander said: We are having a hard time at the moment owing to the war; how can I think of having a birthday party?
The official earnestly requested him to allow them to put the hen and eggs on the breakfast table.
Kim Il Sung looked outside and continued: Spring is really a good season; flowers come into bloom in mountains, farmers plough and sow the fields and the hens hatch chicks; the hen you bought may also hatch chicks, so we’d better return it rather than eating it; I will accept your sincerity when the war is over.
The official had to return the hen and eggs to the villager.
