A new breeding place of black-winged stilt, a rare water-bird, was recently discovered in the migratory bird sanctuary in Sindo County, North Phyongan Province of the DPRK.
In the course of making a regular survey of animals and plants in major sanctuaries across the country, scientists of the Biodiversity Institute under the State Academy of Sciences observed 20-odd black-winged stilts and their nests, eggs and young birds at reservoirs in Pidan Island, Sindo County and clarified their specific features of habitation.
The black-winged stilt is known as living in America, southwestern Europe, Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
The recent discovery of this bird's breeding place in the northwest coastal area of Korea proved again that the Sindo migratory bird sanctuary is rich in biodiversity and very favourable for migratory birds’ habitation.
The sanctuary, located at the centre of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, plays an important role in ensuring stoppage and breeding of migrants.
In particular, many water birds flying from the south to the north in spring would stay there.
