“Sacrifice small things for big interests,” it is an instructive saying indeed.

Japanese politicians began to say that as they left the whole of their territory at the disposal of the US as its strategic military base and a bridgehead for realizing its Asia strategy after World War II.

As a result, Japan was rewarded with “big benefits” other defeated nations had never imagined.

During the Korean war in the 1950s Japan offered the entire country to the US as its military base and ran munitions industries at full capacity to radically boost the floundering economy.

Under the positive US support and protection it has already ranked high in the maritime operation forces and the theatre of operations of its Self-Defence Forces expanded in all directions.

Japan has become impudent enough to give rise to territorial disputes with neighbouring countries continuously from the Kuril Islands in the north down to Nansha Islands in the south, and is now dreaming of becoming a permanent UN Security Council member.

It has presumably obtained big, but lost small things.

Recently the Okinawa prefectural assembly unanimously voted the written opinion on the fundamental revision of the unfair Japan-US status of forces agreement.

Over 70 percent of the US military bases in Japan are concentrated in Okinawa and therefore, it has suffered great damage for decades due to the backbreaking burden for the upkeep of the US bases, incessant crimes, all kinds of accidents and environmental destruction.

The fact that the prefectural assembly has adopted 100 protest resolutions and written opinions against the accidents caused by GIs till 2012 clearly shows how dissatisfied the locals are with the US forces in Japan.

In February there was a prefectural referendum on the relocation of the US military base and more than 70 percent of the locals voted against it. However, the government totally disregarded the opinion of the prefectural population on the pretext of “national security”.

The more the Japanese authorities cling to foreign forces to seek bigger profits, the more outrageous the master grows beyond comparison.

A typical example is the recent landing drill of American troops in the Kadena military base in Okinawa.

The two governments of Japan and the US already agreed to hold landing exercises only on an island in 1996.

On October 29, defence minister Kono demanded the US forces stop the drill, saying it was a breach of the agreement, but the US forces side ignored it and staged the drill in the Kadena base.

It was reportedly the fourth time this year that the dangerous military exercise was conducted openly in the sky above them.

The US has placed increasing pressure upon Japan, including for the rise of upkeep of US forces in Japan, opening of the agricultural market and purchase of US-made weaponry. It is due treatment to it which served as a faithful servant and war servitor to support the US while sacrificing the interests of the local people.

What then do the Japanese politicians intend to do by justifying their subservience to the US with the deceptive logic that they have to sacrifice small things to big ones?

They plan to realize the dream of building a military power and expanding overseas by all means with the backup of the US in utter disregard of the survival, human rights and interests of the locals.
