Ri Yon Hui, aged 65, resident in Sansong-dong, Haeju City of South Hwanghae Province, has recently donated a historical relic Genealogy of the Ris of Toksu Origin.
This book records the Ri family members, ranging from Ri Ton Su who was born in 1182 and served as a military officer in the period of Koryo (918-1392) as the progenitor to Ri Jong Hyon (born in 1833) in the 25th generation.
Toksu is the name of a place in Kaephung County, Kaesong City.
The Ri family in Toksu is famous for many civilians and military officers who performed feats, including Sinsaimdang (female painter and poet, 1504-1551) in the years of the feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910) and her son Ri I (government official and scholar, 1536-1584), and Ri Sun Sin (patriotic general, 1545-1598).
The prefaces of this book were written respectively in 1713, 1740, 1776 and 1838.
The book contains the original text of an address presented to the King in 1831.
It also introduces the origin of the name of Toksu, the historical records of the progenitor and the general particulars observed in drawing up the genealogy.
It added an appendix of the lineage of Ri I in the 13th generation.
“I donated the book with an idea of making it a national treasure, not a family heirloom. I have nothing more to wish for, if it will give a little help to the studies into the history of our country,” said Ri Yon Hui.
