Rise in temperature due to global warming have changed many things on the earth.
Such changes have been witnessed in the DPRK in recent years.
In the 2010s alone, the annual average temperature of the country was over 9.5℃ in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and 9.9℃ in 2019, the highest ever since meteorological observation. The country’s daily mean temperature on Taehan (the height of the winter cold, or the last of the 24 seasonal divisions according to the lunar calendar that fell on January 20 this year) was -5.3℃, 2.5℃ higher than the average year.
Locals have said it is much colder on Sohan (the beginning of the severest cold, or the 23rd of the 24 divisions according to the lunar calendar that falls on around January 6) than Taehan. But on Sohan this year the daily average temperature across the country was 1.9℃, 5.7℃ higher than the average year. The next day’s temperature rose to 1.3℃. It rained in most of the central and southern parts of the east and west coastal areas of Korea from January 6 to 8, 50 mm in average, an unprecedented phenomenon in meteorological observation.
As a result, there were no severe cold in midwinter in the country this year.
If the temperature in winter keeps the current rising tendency due to global warming in the current decade, probably the memories of bitter cold on Sohan and Taehan, the traditions of the Korean people which have been passed on since olden times, might fade away just as the Arctic ice thaws and glaciers vanish.
