The 15th national meeting of health workers for swapping their experience on devotion to patients took place in Sinchon County, South Hwanghae Province in November last year.
Kim Chun Ok, head of obstetrical and gynaecological department of the Phyonggang County People’s Hospital in Kangwon Province, told her story of having devoted herself to improving the people’s health for over four decades, leaving an indelible impression to the audience.
Three years ago, a woman in a critical condition due to hysterorrhexis during labour was urgently carried to her department.
Though she was proud of her long career and rich clinical experience, she was also upset. But, she calmed down herself with a sense of responsibility for the patient’s life and worked out a detailed plan for treatment. Holding one consultation after another with her colleagues, she buckled down to an intensive treatment for the patient.
The surgical operation for hysterectomy was carried out successfully, but it needed urgent blood transfusion for the patient. The amount of blood in store fell short of the demand.
She did not hesitate to give a transfusion of her own blood to the patient.
Many medical workers of the hospital followed in her wake and thus brought the patient back to life.
That night, her son worried about her health for the large amount of blood transfusion. She told him as follows: Personal wellbeing can be said to be happiness, but I think devotion for others is more worthwhile and happier. I have nothing to desire if all people are in good health.
Over the past several decades she has donated 4.5 litres of blood for patients.
