One day in November Juche 79 (1990) Chairman Kim Jong Il received a letter of thanks from a couple of Cuban linguists working in the DPRK.
Even after eight years of marriage the couple had no child because of the wife’s habitual abortion. She got pregnant again while staying in the DPRK and was admitted to the Pyongyang Maternity Hospital.
They were in part delighted, in part worried, because it was three months before the expiry of their visa, and they were obliged to leave the DPRK. Then, she was certain to have a miscarriage.
Informed of the situation from an official concerned, Kim Jong Il ensured that their stay was extended to allow her to receive medical treatment at the hospital and warm hospitality as usual.
Afterwards, she gave birth to a son on November 9, 1990.
The couple wrote a letter of gratitude to the Korean leader, in which they earnestly asked him to name their son.
Kim Jong Il was delighted to learn that the foreign couple had produced their first son and named him Saeppyol (morning star in Korean), meaning a star to be seen everywhere, and sent the baby precious gifts.
Expressing their heartfelt thanks to Kim Jong Il, the Cuban couple said to the Korean official concerned in the following vein: We would like to extend sincere gratitude to Kim Jong Il. We will live up to his loving care by bringing up our son Saeppyol to be a symbol of friendship between Cuba and the DPRK.
