Rope-skipping is one of favourite folk games among the Korean children.
Historical documents in the period of feudal Joson dynasty (1392-1910) said: According to the folklore, children played a game of turning a rope around them. Some of them turned it over 1 000 times. The game helps them have strong legs and build up their physique. It is called rope-skipping.
The ways of rope-skipping have become more diverse according to the materials of the rope and their elasticity.
In its early stage, ropes twisted by hemp or rice straws were used. With the use of elastic rubber rope in modern times, a new method of skipping over a fixed rope was created.
It can be played by a kid alone or several children.
Today, many Korean children play the game for building up their physique and for pastime.
It is a national intangible cultural heritage.
