Kim Il Sung Stadium is located at the foot of Moran Hill in Pyongyang, the capital city of Korea.
It stands on the historic site where Kim Il Sung, on October 14, Juche 34 (1945), made a speech on his triumphal return to the homeland after achieving Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule.
Before Korea’s liberation it was a small baseball ground, and after liberation, it was renovated and became the Pyongyang Public Playground. Later, under the guidance of Kim Il Sung, it was reconstructed and expanded into a stadium with various facilities including seats for spectators, thus making a contribution to the development of the sporting techniques and physical culture of the people.
With a view to glorifying forever the President’s leadership achievements associated with the Moranbong Stadium and ensuring that the stadium rendered a significant contribution to the development of sports in the country, Kim Jong Il personally guided the reconstruction and expansion of the stadium to complete it on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the President.
On April 10, Juche 71 (1982), the Central People’s Committee of the DPRK adopted a decree on renaming the stadium Kim Il Sung Stadium in reflection of the unanimous desire of all the people.
The stadium has now developed into a modern one that can host both national and international games, under the wise leadership of Kim Jong Un.
On October 9, Juche 105 (2016), the inauguration of the stadium reconstructed in accordance of world standard was held on a grand scale.
With seating capacity of 100 000, it has rooms for FIFA office, coaches, press conference, doping test, treatment, sci-tech learning, and many other sports, cultural and welfare facilities, service network and training halls.
At present different national and international games, as well as mass-based sporting activities, are active at the stadium.
It has greatly contributed to the sports development of the country as a monumental structure of the new century and a grand base of sports and culture.
