Derived from the folk song “The Song of Early Youth” the folk song “Land of Morning Calm” was rewritten to suit the aesthetic tastes of the times.
The former widely prevailed in our country between the late 19th century and the early 20th century.
Accompanied by a dance it appeared in the music and dance epic “Our Glorious Country” which was composed in 1958. Its lyrics were rewritten to speak highly of the socialist country and reentitled “Land of Morning Calm”. It was reperformed in 1988 on the Okryugum (a string instrument of Korea) while at the same time its two bars multiplied into three.
Consequently, the folk song has been enabled to portray the gratitude of our people for their socialist country and their great national pride and confidence with strong national feelings.
Moreover, the folk song eulogizes the aspiration of our people to be proud of their socialist country which has been extricated from its centuries-old backwardness and poverty and converted into a happy paradise throughout, plus their infinite love for it.
The lyrics of the folk song feel soft and are rich in spoken words. The result is that they are friendly and truthful with the audience and national in content.
The folk song is melodized in eight-twelve time. It is composed of two parts on the whole.
From the first part of the folk song onward its melody is clear and smooth thanks to the short notes of its lyrics.
At the second part of the folk song its melody starts in a high pitch, is coordinated in the middle and gradually lowers to the finish.
The folk song is bequeathed to posterity as a legacy of our national music.
