In every July, the month when President Kim Il Sung passed away, the Korean people especially feel an immense yearning for him.
“President Kim Il Sung proposed building a large library for workers, farmers, intellectuals, youth and students, instead of any government building, in the present site of the study house, the best place in Pyongyang which he had spared for decades,” said Nam Sun Nyo, vice-president of the study house.
Nam added that when officials suggested naming the study house "Kim Il Sung library" or "Kim Il Sung study house", the President told them that he had thought of its name for a long time and it would be best to name it “Grand People's Study House” in the meaning that it is a hall where all the people study, thereby christening it before it was constructed.
He also energetically guided the whole process of the construction project as he made sure that an architectural style was adopted in reflection of the demand and aspirations of the people.
The magnificent Korean-style building consists of 10 blocks, and big and small Korean-style roofs number more than 30.
It has 20-odd reading rooms with 6 000 seats, over 10 lecture rooms and several question-and-answer rooms and music halls centring around the libraries capable of housing lots of books, and the lecture rooms are equipped with modern educational facilities.
