Pyongyang, August 7 (KCNA) -- The Rason area in northeastern part of the DPRK has diverse and rich ecosystem.
In the area there are Rason Migratory Bird Reserve of national and international significance, Alsom Seabird Breeding Reserve and Uam Northern Fur Seal Reserve.
The Rason Migratory Bird Reserve covering an area of more than 3 200 hectares in Tuman River estuary is comprised of various wetland types such as Manpho, Tongbonpho and Sobonpho lakes, mudflats, reedbeds, rice paddy fields, estuary, delta area, etc. It was inscribed on the list of wetlands of international importance (Ramsar site) in Juche 107 (2018).
Until now, more than 40 000 water-birds in 228 species have been observed in the reserve. Among them are 12 200 Eurasian Wigeon, 6 500 Anas platytynchos (mallard) and 4 650 Aythya fuligula (tufted duck), almost 2 percent of East Asian population, 3 100 falcated ducks (Anas falcate), more than 3 percent of global population, over 100 mute swans, 7 percent of the estimated flyway population of this species, and more than 290 Temminck's Cormorants. Besides, 1 990 long-tailed ducks that have been found to be vulnerable species and more than 200 far eastern curlews, a globally endangered species, were observed.
The Alsom Seabird Breeding Reserve has been a breeding and feeding ground for several tens of seabird species.
Sea in waters off Uam, a roost of spotted seals and northern fur seals, is a national reserve for northern fur seals.
In the peaceful woods, crystal-clear lakes, mudflats and the vast area of sea off Rason, one can enjoy biological diversity including wild animals like Roe Deer, Red Fox, Eurasian Red Squirrel, Manchurian Chipmunk and Leopard Cat, different species of insects, aquatic animals and plants. -0-
