Recently, the damage caused by harmful insects is getting more serious in different parts of the world.
Experts attribute it to climate change.
According to their opinion, global warming makes harmful insects multiply, become voracious and change the mode of locomotion.
Finally, it will pose great threat to the global crop yields.
It is said that if temperature rises by 2°C, wheat, rice and maize yields may decrease by 46, 19 and 31 percent respectively due to the damage by harmful insects.
A typical example is the damage by desert locust clouds.
The prevalence of desert locust clouds in dozens of African and Asian countries for several months this year did heavy damage to farm produce.
An economist of the World Food Programme said that the threat of desert locust clouds is more serious than COVID-19 in East Africa.
Shortly ago, a high-ranking UN official said that the extent of damage by desert locusts is unprecedentedly big and climate change is the main factor which worsened the damage.
Experts asserted that though East Africa is a dry region, it rained heavily in 2019, affected by a tropical cyclone which occurred in the hot waters of the Indian Ocean, and thus suffered enormous damage by desert locusts.
Some Asian countries are also suffering heavily from the harmful insects which could not be seen in the past.
Moths living on crops are now spreading in Asian countries.
This harmful insect whose home is the tropical and subtropical region of America multiplies when temperature rises.
It spread to Asian countries including India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam in 2018.
According to information, corn and sugar cane yields decreased by 20-30 percent due to the effect of moths in some parts of Asia and Africa. Worse still, some areas reportedly harvested nothing, except empty heads of grain.
European grain producers are estimated to sustain over 75 percent of grain loss due to the damage by harmful insects multiplying due to climate change.
Many countries direct much effort to the prevention of damage by harmful insects while tightening the monitoring of them, strengthening an early warning system and informing people of their dangerousness and their extermination method.
