The following happened when Chairman Kim Jong Il, together with his fellow students from Kim Il Sung University, was seconded to a project to widen the road between Wasan-dong and Ryongsong, Pyongyang in May Juche 50 (1961).
One day, he called a student of the night work team during a break time. He asked whether the members of his work team returned a shovel to an old man living around the construction site after replacing its handle they had broken during work a few days ago.
The student answered that the old man was very satisfied at the sight of the new handle of his shovel.
Kim Jong Il said as follows: You won the old man’s heart with a new handle of shovel. This is a very precious thing that cannot be bartered for one thousand handles. Some students broke his shovel handle a few days ago while tending his flower garden and digging a big stone to clear out of the ditch under the fence. But they attempted to return it without repairing it. It was a serious problem. The grandfather would not mind it even if they had returned it broken, as they helped him in his housework. But, we should not do any harm to the people’s property.
After a while, he stressed that students should treasure the people’s interests more than theirs and put them under the first consideration.
