When a vigorous campaign was underway in the DPRK to remove the aftermath of floods and typhoon No. 8 which recently hit several areas, the country suffered another damage from heavy rain and strong wind caused by typhoon No. 9 on September 2 and 3.
Over 1 000 dwelling houses along the coastline areas in South and North Hamgyong provinces were destroyed, and not a few public buildings and vast areas of farmland inundated.
Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un visited the typhoon-hit area on September 5 to learn about the situation, and convened the enlarged meeting of the Executive Policy Council of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea to take measures for organizing the campaign for recovery from the damage caused by natural disasters.
The meeting had an in-depth discussion about the issue of recovery of the typhoon-hit areas in the two provinces and discussed and decided on such detailed measures as formation of reconstruction forces to be urgently seconded to the areas, designing and transport of materials.
It is the steadfast will of the WPK to spare nothing for the people and do everything possible for them.
Earlier, Kaechon and Komdok areas suffered severe damage from sudden heavy rain and typhoon No.15 in July and August 2012, and Rason City from torrential rain in August 2015, and the northern part of North Hamgyong Province from flood unprecedented in the country’s records of meteorological observation in 2016. At that time, the WPK did not confine the rehabilitation to a mere construction for restoring living conditions but turned the afflicted areas into new cities and villages, always sharing good times and bad with flood victims.
This August, too, the country suffered severe damage by the disastrous heavy rain and floods. At this juncture, the 16th meeting of the Political Bureau of the 7th WPK Central Committee was held to discuss and decide on the issue of removing the aftermath of flood damage and providing stable living conditions to the flood victims as early as possible by concentrating all efforts, and took relevant measures.
Briefing on the general situation of flood damage, Kim Jong Un said that the flood victims must be suffering great pains as they are living in temporary dwelling quarters with their houses and properties lost. He earnestly said that at such a crucial time as now, our Party must take full responsibility for their living and go closer to them to share their hardship and relieve them of it.
As a result, a lot of materials, including food, salt, toothpaste and sanitary goods, were supplied to the disaster victims, and officials of Party and power organs yielded their office buildings to them for temporary residence and moved to tents.
