EU Strives for Exploration of Outer Space

Today, exploration of outer space has an increasingly profound impact on the socio-economic development and progress, and peaceful use of outer space is becoming a global trend.

As many countries across the world are vying with each other for exploration of outer space, the efforts by the European Union(EU) for peaceful exploration of outer space are also increasing.

In early July 2020, EU announced that it would develop its own independent Navigation Satellite System “Galileo” into a service system providing most accurate information in the world by completing the system in 2024, 3 years ahead of its schedule.

The development of the Navigation Satellite System “Galileo” started in 1998 and the system is in operation on an experimental basis since September 2019. If four more satellites are launched, all 30 satellites will reportedly be in place, which are required for normal operation.

As a follow-up to this objective, EU plans to launch a new generation carrier rocket “Ariane 6” in 2021. It is also speeding up its preparation for launching “Ariane 7”, an embodiment of the latest “reusable carrier rocket” technology.

It is the views of the experts that “Galileo” system would provide the most accurate information among the existing navigation satellite systems, as “Galileo” would produce an image of an object on the surface of earth with only a margin of error of up to 4 meters, compared to the margin of error of 15 meters done by GPS.

Foreign media are commenting that in case the European Union achieves independence in the domain of outer space through the “Galileo” project, thus completely freeing itself from relying on the global positioning system of other country, it will not only increase the EU’s international influence and status, but also help accelerate its access into the global navigation satellite service market.

Outer space, like all other material assets on the earth, belongs to the entire humankind. To all countries that desire independent development on their own strength, peaceful exploration of outer space is a globally acknowledged legitimate right and it will bring great benefits to the human activities and socio-economic development.
