“Our workteam leader always tells us that proper tunnelling requires the unity of minds,” said a member of the high-speed tunnelling workteam of Pit No. 10 of the Namdok Youth Coal Mine under the Pukchang Area Youth Coal-mining Complex.
The leader refers to Ro Chang Ho who was honoured with the title of central meritorious person of socialist patriotism this year.
After his demob, he was assigned to the coal mine as a tunnelling worker.
The devotion of the taciturn man to others stood out after he became the workteam leader.
Ro began his work with turning his workteam into a harmonious group.
“Our workteam leader is a man of action and leads others by setting practical examples,” said Kim Chol Jin, chief of a post.
He always found himself among his men in coal pits where water dripped from the ceiling and worked overtime for several days to help rookies improve their technical skills. He also used to correct drilling holes they selected in wrong places.
He prepared wedding spreads for his men when they were to get married and took warm care of them as their parents would do.
“When my son was burned by accident, Ro Chang Ho donated his skin twice for skin graft,” said tunnelling worker Ri Kun Sang.
And Ro kindly led and helped forward a coal miner who was the butt of criticism. Drawn by his deep sincerity, the previous “black sheep” regained his clear conscience and became a labour innovator and an active worker in the coal mine.
His wages are not exceptionally higher than others’ and his family is not so well off.
“He spent a great deal of family savings securing dairy goats in order to provide his men in the pit with milk every day. He also built a greenhouse in our kitchen garden to put fresh vegetables on their dining table even in winter. As I witnessed his endeavours, I was deeply moved by his self-sacrificing spirit,” said Ro’s wife Kim Hyang Suk.
Following his examples, Kim also became the “cook” for the workteam.
Harmony among the workteam resulted in increased production.
Its workteam members pooled their efforts and wisdom to develop several technical innovation plans and original ideas, including a new blasting method for remarkably speeding up tunnelling even under unfavourable lithological conditions and a water-jet dust collector using compressed air.
At present, his workteam is known as a model unit in the complex.
