According to estimates of the United Nations, at least 820 million people around the world, including 244 million children under five years old, were suffering from hunger as of last June.
Especially, estimates have it that about 50.6 million people will be suffering from food shortage in the Horn of Africa and some 15.4 million under five will suffer malnutrition in the western and middle parts of Africa by the end of this year.
In actuality, ceaseless natural disasters, climate change, armed disputes and epidemics, as main contributory factors in the destruction of food security, cause food crises in many countries.
In Sahel in the middle of Africa 13.4 million are in urgent need of humanitarian aids and 6.6 million of them are suffering from severe food shortage.
According to the UN, nearly 22 million are facing a serious food shortage in the Democratic Republic of Congo. As a result, it became the country with the largest number of people suffering from food shortage. Meanwhile, 15 percent of some 21 million population of Burkina Faso are faced with a grave food crisis.
Over 20 million people in Yemen where an internal war has dragged on for several years, more than 10 million in Afghanistan and 9.3 million in Syria are suffering from food shortage, while 6.5 million people of South Sudan, or more than half of its total population, are hit by a food shortage crisis.
To ensure food security arises as a pressing issue for social stability and development.
Many countries are paying great attention to development of agriculture such as securing seeds that can produce a high yield even in adverse weather conditions and attaching importance to solving technical problems. They are also creating an atmosphere of saving food without wasting.
The DPRK is making a large investment in agriculture and directing big efforts to sustainable increase of food production.
