Some years ago, a waste water purifying technology was introduced into a mine to prevent environmental pollution, resulting in the establishment of a process of producing pigments from the deposits of the waste water.
The inventor is Sim Ryong Chon, director of the Ryanggang Provincial Mangyong IT Exchange Centre.
He had a due motive for buckling down to developing the waste purifying and recycling technologies quite irrelevant to his occupation.
On his business trip to a mine area far away from Hyesan in Ryanggang Province in 2013, he happened to see the earth there stained in blue colour. He found out that the waste water which had been discharged from an abandoned pit of the mine for scores of years polluted a large area of land.
“It was not easy for me to make a decision to start the research as I was not a researcher or environmentalist. I only took the suffering of our land as my own,” recalled Sim.
He researched and worked day and night to neutralize the waste water with high acidity from the disused pit based on the analysis of the water.
In the course of that he visited lots of units such as Kim Il Sung University and the State Academy of Sciences, as well as nearby Hyesan University of Agriculture and Forestry.
He used to sit up all night reading books to acquire necessary knowledge and referring to related documents.
He sometimes went down to the risky pit with others to cut a drainage channel for waste water and even built a greenhouse at the entrance of the pit to carry on research in winter.
When he finally found a method of neutralizing waste water by means of metal chips, he travelled scores of kilometres to and from Taehongdan two to three times a day to secure the chips.
As a result, he succeeded in purifying the waste water a year after he buckled down to it and helped the mine build eight purifying ponds. He did not rest on his laurels.
He noticed that the reddish yellow deposits that were formed in the process of purification could be used as pigments for construction.
After confirming relevant data, he developed nine kinds of nano iron oxide pigments by adjusting burning temperature in 2017.
The state sci-tech deliberation conducted in 2018 verified that all the technical indices of the pigments were up to national standards and their economic profitability was high as their raw material is industrial waste.
