Pyongyang, December 4 (KCNA) -- There are many historical relics dating back to Koguryo Kingdom (B.C. 277-A.D. 668) in the area of Mt Taesong in Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK.
Among them is the Kwangbop Temple.
The temple was built in 392, the early days when Buddhism was disseminated in Korea.
As the main building of the temple, the Taeung Hall consists of three front rooms and three flank rooms. In the middle of the temple there is a five-storied octagonal pagoda made of granite stones.
Haethal and Chonwang gates are gabled houses with double eaves, consisting of three rooms in front and two rooms in flank. There are figures of Manjushiri, Samantabhadra and the Four Devas in the rooms.
Besides, there are east and west monasteries having five rooms in front and one room in flank with the floor of a Korean verandah attached.
Written on the monument to the temple is a tale about nine dragons and 99 ponds.
The temple was completely destroyed in July Juche 41 (1952), the period of the Fatherland Liberation War.
Visiting the temple site on November 9, Juche 78 (1989), President Kim Il Sung gave an instruction on restoring the temple to the original state. Thus, the temple was restored in Juche 79 (1990).
The Kwangbop Temple, one of the Korean nation's cultural heritages, has been well preserved as a national treasure. -0-
