Sindo County in North Phyongan Province of the DPRK is called Pidan Island.
The county, which includes Pidan Island extending to the West Sea of Korea from the estuary of downstream of the Amnok River and several other islets, came into being under the wise leadership of the peerlessly great men who had worked heart and soul to turn a tideland into the country's raw material base for chemical fibre.
When he toured the islets in the waters off Sindo in June 1958, President Kim Il Sung unfolded a plan to turn the area into a base of raw materials for chemical fibre.
In August 1966, he, together with Chairman Kim Jong Il, visited the tideland in the area under reclamation and learned about its progress, walking muddy road.
Supporting the Chairman's suggestion that it would be good to entrust the reed field construction to young people, the President said that young people throughout the country should be called on to complete the construction under the slogan "Let us complete the construction of Pidan Island!"
By the devoted efforts of young builders, the islets in the area were linked by a 40-odd kilometre-long embankment to form thousands of hectares of reed field.
Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un visited Sindo County in June 2018 and said that to turn the county into a reliable raw material base for Juche-based chemical fibre and increase reed production is an important work for further strengthening the independence of the country's chemical industry. And he called for doing reed farming well to keep its production going at the rate of the peak year and continuously reaping a rich harvest of reed in the future.
