Pyongyang Fruit Farm
In Nunggum-dong, Ryokpho District of Pyongyang, the capital city of the DPRK, there is the Pyongyang Fruit Farm.
The farm, whose fruit production is put on an intensive and scientific basis of high level, has produced a large quantity of tasty fruits for citizens every year.
The history of its development is associated with the wise guidance of President Kim Il Sung.
The Nunggum area was originally regarded as a village with sterile land.
Hillocks in the area were thick with all sorts of shrubs and they were burnt by the indiscriminate bombing of the enemies in the period of the Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953).
In February Juche 41 (1952) when the war was at its height, the President visited the area deserted as a sterile land. Looking at a hillock covered with bomb craters and ashes, he said that a large-scale fruit farm should be built there to be handed down to the posterity and fruit trees of good species, favored by the people and suited to the weather conditions of the country, should be planted. After all, the history of the Pyongyang Fruit Farm started in the days of the war.
Later, he visited the farm several times, indicating the manuring method and making it sure that an irrigation system was established to raise its fruit yield per hectare.
In recent years, the farm conducted the rotation of various kinds of fruit trees including dwarf apple tree and opened up a prospect for remarkably boosting the fruit yield, while manuring and tending the fruit trees in a scientific way to suit the characteristics of the species.
