Archery is one of the predominant sporting events of the Korean nation, which has been transmitted and developed from generation to generation.
Historical records say that “bow and arrow are the speciality of our country” and “shooting a bow and riding horse are our forte,” which show that Koreans have enjoyed and popularized archery since olden times.
Koreans’ bowmanship attained a high level in the period of the Three Kingdoms. King Tongmyong, the founder of Koguryo which existed between BC 277 and 668 AD, was called “Jumong” in the meaning that he was an excellent archer, which proves that they paid much attention to archery in the country.
It is said that they practised archery since their childhood.
On March 3 every year, they held a hunting game on a large scale.
Many of the tomb murals from the period show people shooting arrows. They are the tangible proof that archery was organically intertwined with their work and life.
For example, the Tokhung-ri tomb mural depicts a scene of archers competing on horseback, which shows that the sport was popular among Koguryo people.
During the period of Koryo (918-1392), the sport was a favourite of many people, irrespective of rank and wealth.
The traditional and popular sporting event is still widely encouraged as a means of physical training and a leisure activity among the Korean people.
Professional archers are constantly improving their skills amid the nationwide interest.
There is a well-knit system in place to train future archers and national competitions are held every year attracting close attention of experts and fans. Meanwhile, an effort for putting the nation’s archery on scientific footing as required by the global trend of development is being pushed ahead in full scale.
