“The world’s rare species have been observed again in the course of conducting an investigation into major wetlands in the spring transition period of migratory birds this year,” said Ri Chung Song, head of the nature reserve laboratory of the biodiversity institute of the State Academy of Sciences.
The recently-discovered rare species of migratory bird is Netta rufina, which is distributed in the environs of Lake Baikal of Russia, Xinjiang and western areas of China, southern Europe and elsewhere.
According to Ri, the DPRK observed that migratory birds, known as rare species, made a stopover or bred on several occasions in the past, and such a fact is getting more frequent.
Typical examples included Pycnonotus sinensis in December 2016, Melanitta perspicillata in October 2017, Himantopus himantopus between late June and early July in 2019 and Passer rutilans between May 21 to 23 in 2020. They were found in different wetland biodiversity hot spots.
The observation frequency was high for such endangered and weak species as spoonbill (EN), hooded crane (VU) and swan goose (VU).
Especially, spoonbills made a stopover in major wetlands not only on the west coast of Korea but also on its east coast, while tens of thousands of swan geese had a stopover at the Mundok migratory bird sanctuary in autumn and 2 000-odd hooded cranes made a stopover at the Mundok migratory bird sanctuary in March this year.
According to experts, the fact that such rare species as Himantopus himantopus breed in the country and endangered and weak species of migratory birds move to the DPRK in flocks shows that the course of migration of birds is changing.
In the DPRK, lots of wetland reserves have been established, including 50-odd wetland biodiversity hot spots, and efforts have been made to swiftly cope with ecological adaptation by investigating ecological environment according to seasons and year.
The DPRK joined the Ramsar Convention in 2018, and the Mundok and Rason migratory bird reserves were registered as internationally important wetland sites.
