Il Yon, Monk of the Koryo Dynasty

Il Yon is a scholar of monk origin who was active during the Koryo Dynasty which existed between 918 and 1392. He lived from 1206 to 1289. In his childhood he was called Kim Kyon Myong and renamed Il Yon later. He was son of a commoner. At the age of 14, he became a monk and studied while making the rounds of several Buddhist temples. In 1283, he was raised to the highest rank of monkdom. He had a deep study of not only Buddhism and Confucianism but also the Korean history. Here is Doctor and Associate Professor Ju Song Chol, Section Chief of the History Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences. "Encouraged by the patriotic struggle of the Koryo people against foreign invasion, Il Yon paid deep attention to the history and culture of our country and wrote 'Samgukyusa'(History of the Three Kingdoms) in the last days of his life. Although it was embellished with Buddhist details and woven with absurd mysticism, 'Samgukyusa' serves as main materials for the study of the history of the ancient times and the period of Three Kingdoms of Korea as it deals with a great deal of valuable historical facts." In his later years Il Yon lived at the Wongak Temple before his death.
