Efforts to protect ecological environment

In recent years the government of the DPRK has actively protected the ecological environment of the country, keeping in step with the global activities for the protection of the ecological environment to cope with the evermore serious environmental pollution. It has amended and supplemented the Law of the DPRK on the Protection of the Environment and the DPRK Law on the Prevention of the Sea Pollution and adopted the DPRK Law on the Prevention of the Air Pollution, strengthening the legal foundation to protect the environment and cope with the climatic change. Along with the survey of the ecological environment of the country, it calls for mapping out detailed plans of stages to improve the water quality and environment and conserve the rivers and carrying them out correctly. It has set the coming 10 years including this year as the long-term plan period for afforestation and water conservancy and worked out annual plans. On its basis, dredging, embankment filling and rockwork are done at rivers in the areas with great danger of flood damage. A scrupulous plan for anti-landsliding project has been mapped out to keep the land from being washed away and prevent forest fire. Undertakings are actively done to increase the forest resources in a sustained way, conserve biodiversity and keep the ecosystem service and lower the degradation of land. A series of undertakings are promoted to map out the state energy strategy with the use of the natural energy as a major factor and combine the sustained development of the environment and energy. The DPRK, a signatory to the UN Convention on Climatic Change, has set a goal to reduce the greenhouse gas emission and is striving to attain it.
