“Forests play an important role in economic development for our mountainous county. We are trying hard to cover the mountains in the county with different kinds of wild fruit trees,” said Han Hong Chol, manager of the Rinsan County Forest Management Station.
He added that his station secured saplings of good species of wild fruit trees from across the country, including pine-nut, black walnut, Evodia daniellii and large chestnut trees.
“Chestnut trees have borne well this year. It took several years to acclimatize and get the trees to produce large and tasty chestnuts,” said Kim Sok Gyu, staffer in charge of nursing young trees.
What is important in producing wild fruit tree saplings is to correctly select healthy seeds and suitable time.
The station scientifically carries on seed treatment, sprouting, sowing and selection of right time.
It uses computers to measure, control and monitor the environment of the greenhouse, outdoor adaption area and outdoor cultivation ground and automatically controls sun screens, heat insulation curtain, windows, exhausters, pumps and the like.
At present, it produces tens of thousands of saplings a year through the double cultivation of saplings by taking advantage of the optimized tree nursery conditions, while saving much labour and large quantities of water, electricity and materials.
It is now producing wild fruit tree saplings by focusing on planting mixed and oil-bearing forests with such useful trees as pine nut, Evodia daniellii and black walnut.
It has developed a rooting accelerant and indigenous microorganism fermentation fertilizer to promote the growth of saplings and build up their resistance to diseases so as to increase their rooting rate.
The station turned out tens of thousands of tree saplings this year alone.
