Recently, the DPRK newly confirmed the important wetland reserves for protecting major species of water birds in danger of extinction.
Scientists of the Biodiversity Institute of the State Academy of Sciences have surveyed more than 50 wetlands of the country over the past 10 years and in the course, clarified the distributed areas of nearly 20 species of birds in danger of global extinction including black-faced spoonbill(EN), Manchurian crane(EN) and stork(EN), types of their habitats, their specific numbers and characteristics of their distribution according to seasons and made it possible to take state measures to protect them in accordance with the continued change in ecological environment in recent years.
The recently-confirmed wetland reserves cover the coast from Sindo County of North Phyongan Province to Mundok County of South Phyonan Province, from Jungsan County of South Phyongan Province to Nampho City and Unryul County of South Hwanghae Province, from Ryongyon County to Paechon County of South Hwanghae Province and from Thongchon County of Kangwon Province to Hamhung City of South Hamgyong Province and the area of the mouth of the Tuman River in Rason City.
Geographically, Korea forms a long peninsula from the north to the south with long coastline and diverse ecosystem. So it plays a very important role as the East Asia-Oceania flyway for northeast Asian migratory birds.
