Enormous damage has been caused in recent years as calamitous meteorological phenomena have occurred more frequently in different parts of the world.

The temperature soared up to nearly 50 degrees centigrade in the northern hemisphere in June, causing scorching hot wave and intense heat, and brought unprecedented downpours and floods in many regions of the world including Western Europe.

In particular, some West European countries had heavy rainfall equivalent to the precipitation of two months in only two days in July, suffering the worst damage in scores of years.

In mid-August, rain dropped on the summit of glacier of Greenland in the Arctic. Temperature has ever risen above the freezing point there, but it is the first time that rain fell.

Researchers asserted that it is a vivid sign of global warming that has been unprecedented so far. Every year, 234 billion tons of ice, nearly 10 times more than the annual mean melting quantity of ice in the 1990s, melt in Greenland due to temperature rise.

According to information available, the mean earth surface temperature has risen 1.09 degrees centigrade higher than that before the industrial revolution between 2011 and 2020 and the speed of rise in sea level increased about 2.85 times.

It should not go unnoticed that some islands are in the danger of submergence due to sea level rise and torrential rains and floods come in different parts of the world.

An opinion poll conducted by the UNDP in early this year on 1.2 million people in 50 countries found that 64 percent of respondents regarded climate change as the most serious threat to humankind and a state of emergency in the world.

According to the analysis of the probability of downpours conducted by climatologists, the probability has increased 1.2 to 9 times higher than that before the industrial revolution in the western parts of Europe and the highest daily precipitation grown by 3 to 19 percent in summer.

At present, the disaster caused by extreme weather numbered five times more than 50 years ago and the amount of loss caused by it is seven times greater than that.

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change expressed concern that extremely high temperature observed once in 50 years before the industrial revolution will be 8.6 times more frequent and their intensity will be stronger if people fail to control global warming.

It is estimated that 216 million people may be reduced to refugees in Latin America, North Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia until 2050 as the consequences of climate change including water shortage, grain output reduction and sea level rise.

Some meteorologists stress the need to declare a state of climate emergency, saying humankind may be faced with a destructive situation due to 3 degrees centigrade rise in temperature in the present century.
