The hostel of employees of the Pyongyang Kim Jong Suk Textile Mill is a place for happy living of weaver girls as it is equipped with all communal amenities for the life of hostellers including cosy rooms, dining hall, beauty salon, shop, library and bathroom.
“For the young women who have finished their daily work, evening hours are a pleasant time,” said Rim Su Hyok, a hostel management official.
Hostellers tell about the pride of native places in the rooms built brightly and neatly and all the inhabitants of a room burst into uproarious laughter by the humour of a funny weaver girl.
Meanwhile, those who like to read books go to the library, while others who are involved in the study-while-you-work system receive online lectures in the e-library.
“With the help of online lectures, I could become an innovator of the factory by bringing out several inventions and original ideas,” said weaver Rim Song Hui.
Rim who came from Hoeryong in the northern end of Korea received online education until very recently and graduated from Pyongyang Han Tok Su University of Light Industry with top honours.
The beauty salon is always crowded with dwellers.
“I don’t spare time for services in order to decorate and put forward the innovators of our factory more smartly and beautifully,” said beauty artist Hyon Jong Sim.
The distinctively-built cooking practice ground is a favourite haunt of residents of the hostel.
According to keeper Kim Kyong Suk, many girls are said to have become skilful in cooking in the course of preparing dishes they saw on TV or in cookery books by themselves in the place.
“Seniors competitively prepared a birthday party for me by showing off their cooking skills in the cooking practice ground, saying it is the first birthday I greet in the hostel after leaving home. I will not forget today,” said Yun Hyang Mi who greeted her birthday.
Hostel dwellers sing songs in reflection of their merry life using the karaoke instrument in the halls of every floor.
Sugimoto Tetsuya, a staff member of the Kasumi International Co, Ltd, made an entry in the visitor’s book on April 18 2018 after looking round the hostel: “It is very surprising. The hostel furnished with a library, treatment room and big bath is as nice as a hotel. Employees might make innovations in their work as they live in such a wonderful hostel. I have a daughter and I hope she could work and live in such a modern hostel.”
