Phungsan dog is an indigenous species of Korea and widely-known as clever and valiant, and originated in the areas of Kapsan, Phungso and Phungsan (today’s Kim Hyong Gwon County) in Ryanggang Province, northern highlands of Korea.
Its fur is mainly white, relatively small ears are pricked forward and a tail is coiled up on the hip.
Its small round oval eyes look like apricot stones and their pupils are black or grey.
Ordinarily, it has gentle character and follows its master well, but it fights its rival to the last without stepping back.
At that time, it bites the enemy’s throat by getting through its legs with agile movements, rather than biting the back of its neck like other ordinary dogs.
It is not only competent to cope with even a big wild animal through close cooperation but also possessed of a temperament throwing it to the ground after following a fixed object to the end.
Phungsan dog does not pounce on children nor recklessly provokes fight with other dogs nor behaves unreasonably. Instead, it protects the family and assets of its master well as it has strong mind to protect its area and group.
It is highly resistant to cold and hot weathers, is not picky but grows well even in unfavourable conditions.
Moreover, it is highly resistant to diseases as it has strong constitution.
Phungsan left many anecdotes in history.
Among them is a story about a Phungsan which breathes its last after saving its drunken master from flames by wetting him with brook water. Another story says that a Phungsan takes care of a blind parentless child while showing him the way. And the other one goes that a Phungsan defends the corpse of its master, who was killed by foreign invaders, for several days.
According to another story, the dog would win the fights against other wild rivals with larger frames like bulldog and shepherd in the period when a dogfight was rampant in the Phungsan area in the past.
Phungsan dog has been designated as a living monument of the DPRK and national dog to be under good protection and multiplication.
