Rinsan County in North Hwanghae Province has favourable conditions for the cultivation of medicinal plants for its comparably cool climate and suitable atmospheric humidity.
Herb fields are evenly distributed all over ri and, particularly, the Rinsan herb farm located in Sangha-ri mass-cultivates herbs.
The farm turns out tens of species of medicinal herbs including peony, broad bellflower, Angelica gigas, elecampane, thistle, adlay and Rehmannia glutinosa.
“Koryo medicines that our people have used since ancient times are unthinkable apart from medicinal herbs. To increase the production of herbs arises as a very important issue in positively encouraging and developing traditional medicine,” said manager Ko Jong Ryol.
According to him, every medicinal herb differs in sowing period, the number of plants per hectare, fertilizing time and harvest time according to what is used as medicinal herb, root, leaf or fruit. If the right time is missed, the output will fall and medicinal efficacy will decrease.
While sowing seeds at the right time to meet the characteristics of medicinal plants, the farm is doubling production by introducing seed- and land-saving cultivation methods.
In the past, 1-1.5 tons of seedlings which are 3 to 4 centimetres long each were planted per hectare, but now small nutritive granulated seedlings are grown and planted. It means that over one ton of seeds is saved when hundreds of kilograms of seeds are planted per hectare.
The farm also conducts research to breed new varieties of herbs and improve cultivation methods.
One or two species of medicinal plants including Rehmannia glutinosa were produced by way of tissue culture in the past, but now positive efforts are made to introduce the method into different species of herbs.
Meanwhile, close attention is being paid to soil improvement.
“As health tonic should be used in consideration of people’s physical characteristics, due results cannot be expected if soil is not improved properly in keeping with the biological features of seeds,” said the manager.
“Since cultivation methods have been simplified as against previously and the output has doubled, so the living standards of farmers have improved. All the farmers pay great attention to putting cultivation methods on a more scientific basis and actively introduce them into production,” said chief engineer Kim Chun Nam.
