The Ogasan Nature Reserve is situated on the boundary between Hwaphyong County of Jagang Province and Kim Hyong Jik County of Ryanggang Province.
The name of Mt Oga is derived from the meaning that five beautiful 1 000-metre-high peaks rise in primeval forests.
In the reserve there are a pass President Kim Il Sung crossed twice in his teens with the lofty intention of liberating Korea and the trees bearing the slogans written by the members of the Korean People’s Revolutionary Army during the anti-Japanese armed struggle.
It has diverse flora as it is located in the boundary between boreal and temperate plant areas.
In the areas below 700 metres above sea level, needle-leaf trees are hardly seen, but different kinds of broadleaf trees including Mongolian oaks and elms form dense forests.
Needle-leaf, broadleaf and mixed forests are distributed in the area between 700 and 1 000 metres above sea level and such needle-leaf trees as Abies nephrolepis, spruce, pine-nut and fir and such broadleaf trees as linden, white birch and Korean poplar grow at altitudes of over 1 000 metres.
The thick forests and diverse natural and geographical conditions provide animals with a favourable living environment.
There are over 130 species of animals and the number of them is larger than those in other areas.
The nature reserve covers an area of more than 6 500 hectares and has recently been inscribed on the list of natural monuments as it is of great significance in scientific study and dissemination of scientific knowledge for the long history of formation and richness of diverse and unique biological resources.
According to an expert, 800 hectares of it were already registered as natural monument “Ogasan primeval forest” and some individual trees including a 1 100-odd-year-old yew and 700-odd-year-old linden were designated as living monuments and are under good protection.
