The Munjin Korean Costume Shop under the Sariwon City Public Service Management Station in North Hwanghae Province is frequented by people.
Most women wearing new styles of chima and jogori in the city say that their clothes were made at the shop.
Among the employees of the shop are the family of manager Kim Yong Gwon (56) who has carried forward the job through four generations.
He began making Korean costumes 30 years ago.
His mother Ri Jong Jin, on her deathbed, said that Korean chima and jogori represent the spirit of the Korean nation and left as a legacy a book concerning the making of national costumes which had been handed down from her mother.
From then on, Yong Gwon began to devote himself to making Korean costumes in order to carry forward the tradition of his family. Sometimes he hit on brilliant ideas while reading the old book to which his ancestors had devoted their heart and soul.
His mother-in-law, too, made Korean costumes from long ago. So, her daughter Yun Jong Sil (54 years old now) got married to him and began to help him in his job.
The eldest daughter Kim Song Gum (30) learned the cutting technique from her father.
Originally, she wanted to learn the Korean dance.
One year, she made her debut at the national Korean costume show wearing her parents-made clothes. Seeing her in elegant and beautiful Korean chima and jogori on TV, not only her neighbours but herself were charmed by the national costumes.
Second daughter Kim Son Ok (28), who was interested in making the Korean costumes at the age of 14, began to learn it from her parents.
On holidays, Yong Gwon’s family members go to a flower garden and other public places.
It serves as a very important opportunity for them to find a way for surveying harmonious patterns and colours suitable for different countenances and figures.
In the course of this, Yong Gwon developed an outside stitching method to further enrich the peculiarity of the Korean chima and jogori .
He keeps in his house 16 diplomas of individual technique prizes and 6 diplomas of team prizes which they have received in the national Korean costume show held every year.
He said: The tradition of the nation is precisely the tradition of a family. To make the Korean costumes has become a part of life for our family. We will try harder to develop the Korean costumes in a more diversified and graceful way as suited to the national characteristics and modern aesthetic feelings.
