China Rejects Foreign Interference in Hong Kong Issue

The 7 th legislative election of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was held on December 19, 2021.

It is the first election ever held after the adoption in March last year by the National People's Congress of China of a resolution to improve and complete the election system of Hong Kong.

The State Council Information Office of the People’s Republic of China made clear in its white paper that the democratic development in Hong Kong has now been put back on normal track and the latest election carries a great significance in ensuring Hong Kong’s long-term prosperity and stability.

But the United States and the Western countries are slandering the legislative election of Hong Kong, claiming that China has undermined democracy in Hong Kong. The U.S. has even gone so far as to impose secondary sanctions, by invoking its domestic legislation called “Hong Kong Autonomy Act”, on 5 members of the liaison office of the Central People’s Government in Hong Kong and the entities working with them who were already subjected to its sanctions since July last year.

This invited strong reactions from the government of China and the government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Spokespersons for the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Central People’s Government liaison office and correspondents’ public office in Hong Kong pointed out that these moves by the U.S. and the West amount to the internal interference and the attempts to undermine prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, and they strongly denounced the U.S. sanctions against China based on its domestic legislation, saying that it is a grave violation of the international laws and the basic norms governing the international relations.

The spokesperson for the government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region also stated that the democratic development of Hong Kong will be pursued in a proper order pursuant to its basic laws, supported by the Central Government and protected by the National Security Law on Hong Kong and the improved and completed election system, warning that any political plots by domestic and foreign forces aimed at hindering this development would never work.

“Global Times” pointed out that the foreign hostile forces struggling to create chaos in Hong Kong are the culprits and wire-pullers that hamper the democratic development of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and accused the moves by the U.S. and its followers, asserting that these are meant to entrap and attack China.

It is quite natural that China strongly rejects foreign interferences, expressing its confidence that the latest legislative election would mean for Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to be an occasion to creditably safeguard and promote genuine democracy and rule of law.

The U.S. and the West are doggedly interfering in the Hong Kong issue despite the strong condemnation and denunciation from China. Their hidden agenda is clearly known even to a child.

The U.S. should abandon its inveterate vice of outrageously interfering in others’ internal affairs for pursuit of its political purposes.
