In December last year, Japanese authority staged an exhibition in Tokyo which was devoted to claiming its dominion over the southern Kuril Islands. It also carried out a joint maritime exercise with the U.S. in the waters off Hokkaido. This is triggering Russia’s sharp vigilance.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia declared that it is an act of overt provocation to Russia while calling attention to the fact that this exhibition displayed neither the San Francisco Peace Treaty under which Japan relinquished its territorial claim to the southern Kuril Islands nor the UN Charter which fixed Russia’s dominion over these islands.
He also said that Japan-U.S. maritime exercise conducted around Hokkaido constitutes a serious challenge and potential threat to the security of Far Eastern region and warned that Russia will follow closely such acts that threaten the security of the country.
Conflict and confrontation revolving around the issue of dominion over the southern Kuril Islands do not show any sign of abating between Russia and Japan as Japan does have such impudence as not to abandon its ambition to expand its territory, denying the result of the World War II.
In October last year, Japanese Prime Minister, soon after taking office, asserted that the issue of dominion over the “northern territory” should not be handed over to the next generation. Earlier in August last year, Japanese Foreign Minister took issue with the working visit of Russian Prime Minister to the southern Kuril Islands, saying that this cannot be connived at as this goes against Tokyo’s position.
Russia maintains firmly that the issue of dominion over the southern Kuril Islands is indisputable because Russia is the successor to the Soviet Union to which these islands were belonged according to the result of the World War II.
Japan ignores history and remains unchanged in its reckless bid to fulfil its ambition for encroaching upon the territory over the century. Its ill-willed behavior will only invite a backlash and strong reaction from Russia.
