in Uiju Township of Uiju County, North Phyongan Province, was a commanding post built in the northern General’s terrace of Uiju Fortress. As it showcases the superior architecture of the Korean people and stands on a beautiful spot, it had been called one of eight scenic spots in North and South Phyongan provinces and Jagang Province.
Located on the summit of Mt Samgak, the highest one north of the Uiju Fortress, it was a vantage point as a commanding post as it commanded a bird’s-eye view of the Amnok River and its surrounding area.
It was first built in the early years of Koryo dynasty (918–1392).
According to Sinjungdonggukyojisungnam (Revised Handbook of Korean Geography) Jungbomunhonbigo , the present pavilion was rebuilt in 1478. It has four bays (14.4 metres) on the façade and four bays (11.85 metres) on a side, with a T-shaped floor on its centre.
The double-eaved, gabled roof enhances its grandeur, and the colourful paintings elevate its appearance.
It is a precious cultural heritage that shows Korea’s architecture of building a pavilion.
As it is associated with the Korean people’s proud history of struggle against foreign aggressors, it is well preserved as a national relic. So, many people frequent it to enjoy their leisure time.
