This year the Academy of Agricultural Science has set a realistic research plan for sustainably increasing the agricultural production of the country and is materializing it properly.
What is noteworthy here is the research for growing high-yield varieties.
Department Head Kim Jong Nam says:
"We are intensifying researches with the general aim of breeding paddy and non-paddy rice seeds, wheat and barley seeds with short period of growth and high yield and actively introducing new farming techniques and methods."
The Paddy Research Institute has set a stepwise research target for breeding paddy strains which can greatly increase the unit-area yield and is accelerating the research for attaining it. Especially, it is intensifying the research for breeding strains suited to the regions severely affected by high temperature, drought, cold-weather, typhoon and salt damages and to the regions with poor yield from low fertility. It is also making researches for establishing a scientific method of growing the bred paddy strains, a rational method of double cropping and a high-yielding cultivation technique.
Meanwhile, other research institutes are directing efforts to the research for making high-yield varieties of wheat prove effective in production practice and creating a new potato farming method. They are also accelerating the research for growing bean with high unit-area yield and various strains of sugar plants and the research for introducing the technology of cultivating high-yield oil-bearing crops.
The researches for breeding high-yield varieties will make an active contribution to achieving the stable and sustainable growth of the agricultural production.
