The Rimyongsu Falls are situated in the City of Samjiyon, Ryanggang Province.
There is Rimyongsu Valley formed by the erosion of the basalt which was spewed out from Mt Paektu during volcanic eruptions a million years ago.
Underground water spouts out of crevices to form the rare Rimyongsu Falls. Their nine main streams empty into the artificial lake of the Rimyongsu Barrage.
The pavilion on top of the falls and black rocks exposed between the streams go well with the crystal-clear water of the lake beneath and surrounding forests. On fine days, a fascinating rainbow forms as sprays of droplets reflect sunlight.
The waterfall unfolds distinctive scenes as azalea blossoms in spring, green woods in summer and scarlet-tinged leaves in autumn blend in well with streams and lake.
The scenery of the falls is mysteriously beautiful as endless streams send up thick clouds of spray, hoarfrost stretches around like an artwork elaborately embroidered with silver threads, the inside of the valley looks like the celestial raiment of an angel when viewed from a long distance and innumerable silver beads are so dazzling in the sunlight when viewed from a short distance.
The water temperature of the falls does not go down below 4°C even in winter.
Every viewer is struck with admiration as they feast their eyes on the unique scene where water streams down between ices despite the intense cold in Mt Paektu.
The spectacular landscape emanates an aura of mystery of nature.
The Rimyongsu Falls were registered as a national natural monument in January 1980.
