From ancient times the Korean people have danced various drum dances in different regions. The dance reflects the life of the people and the joy they experienced in labour.
Different kinds of drum dances were prevalent in various regions of the country, including mugo (a kind of court dance performed by putting the drum on the ground and beating it) which had already been danced from the days of the Koryo dynasty, and popko (a kind of small musical instrument of peasants with handle) dance from the Pongsan mask dance. Also there were Ryongbuknoli of Ryanggang Province which sings of the bumper harvest while beating big drums on the one side of the stage alternately, pukchum played in South Hamgyong Province, in which the dancers carried small drums on their shoulders and made different dance movements while beating them.
After the country’s liberation from the Japanese military occupation on August 15, 1945, the traditional forms of drum dances were discovered and arranged in a fresh way, and they have been produced into different kinds of dance works.
The group dance Gathering Rich Harvest , which depicts the sentiments of the Korean peasants, solo dance Drum Dance and others are excellent works that harmoniously combine the beautiful dance movements of rhythmic patterns and diversified forms of beating the drum.
