The Maengsan black pine forest sprawls in an area of about 220 hectares at the foot of Mt Tongji in Maengsan County, South Phyongan Province of the DPRK. Pines in the forest are those spreading only in the northern area of the country, and they are the indigenous ones growing in that place only.
These black pines were transplanted about 300 years ago, now forming a thick forest. They are 16 m on average and 25 m to the maximum. They are 55-110 cm in diameter at 1 m height and have usually 8 m crown in diameter, 11 m to the maximum. The trunk has no branches up to 12 m height and is smooth with dark brown bark. Pine needles are sharp and pointed which are 9 to 17 cm long and 1.55 mm wide, bigger than red pine’s. They start to grow in May and fall down late in October next year. Both female and male flowers bloom in one tree in mid-May.
The Maengsan black pine grows fast for 40 to 50 years and then slowly after that. Its life is 400 to 500 years.
The forest was chosen as the Maengsan black pine reserve in October Juche 65 (1976), and designated as natural monument No. 53 in January 1980. It is now under good preservation.
