May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB), and this year marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
At present the protection and sustainable use of biodiversity poses as one of the urgent tasks to be solved by the concerted efforts of humankind in the 21st century. It is because biodiversity forms a material foundation urgently needed for the economic development of each country and nation and constitutes an important part of the regional ecosystem. Moreover, biodiversity, which is the basis for supporting the existence and development of mankind, is being damaged by human activities.
For these reasons the CBD Secretariat has set the theme of this year’s IDB as “Building a Shared Future for All Life” and calls on all countries and regions to make positive effort to attain the main goals of the Kunming Declaration “Ecological Civilization: Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth” adopted in Kunming, China.
As a signatory of the CBD, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has worked out mid- and long-term plans for the nationwide protection and sustainable use of biodiversity and is pushing ahead with them proactively.
After mapping out the nationwide master plan for land development and mid- and long-term green growth plan in a far-sighted manner, it is putting in effort to give a facelift to the country including the improvement of ecological environment and urban greening.
Especially, with the main stress put on protecting lives and security of people and preventing the land from natural disasters, it organizes land management including afforestation, river improvement and afforestation for erosion control scrupulously so as to remove the root cause of flood damage.
The country also comprehensively surveys the international biosphere reserves such as Mt Paektu Biosphere Reserve, Mt Kuwol Biosphere Reserve and Mt Chilbo Biosphere Reserve, nature reserves, wildlife sanctuaries and other biodiversity hot spots and maps out plans for each reserve and layouts of new reserves accordingly. And it is accelerating the work to make plans for establishing a nationwide network of reserves and rational ecological channels.
At the same time, it works to raise public awareness of protection of biodiversity and encourage all people to join in this effort by intensifying information activities through publications including multimedia Protection of Biodiversity.
