“This year our farm is putting great efforts into improving soil fertility to meet the specific features of intercropping-based greenhouse vegetable growing which is high in productivity per unit area,” said Cha Chol Jin, vice-chairman of the Management Board of the Jangchon Vegetable Cooperative Farm.
The farm dug deep trench pits in the plots in greenhouses and spread in the pits per hectare several hundred tons of organic manure, which was made from coal ash rich in eight elements, including phosphorus, iron and manganese, and excrement of domestic animals, so as to increase vegetable production by 20 percent.
It also applied growth accelerators including a natural bioactivator, microelement nano fertilizer and homemade carbonated manure at certain intervals from the early period of vegetative growth to provide favourable conditions for the growth of vegetables, thus raising their photosynthetic capacity and the activity of their roots.
The farm also introduces good species of vegetable seeds. At present, it cultivates 18 kinds of good species of vegetables.
On the basis of correct calculation of conditions for ensuring proper temperature in greenhouses and for the growth of vegetables, the farm cultivates vegetables in several stages. It also does intercropping.
For example, it intercrops bok choy, radish and pepper while cultivating spinach as a main crop at the first stage and cucumbers and tomatoes as main vegetables at the next stage. Like this, the farm cultivates vegetables through six stages.
The farm could increase vegetable production as it cultivated greenhouse vegetables without leaving even an inch of land idle, Cha Chol Jin said.
The farm has also introduced a low-association activated water generator into each greenhouse block and provides proper conditions for the growth of vegetables by applying water drop irrigation and general greenhouse environment measuring devices.
