Country-Specific “Special Rapporteur” Mechanism Must Be Abolished Immediately

It has been reported that “special rapporteur” on the situation of human rights in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) was newly appointed at the recent 50 th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
The post of the “special rapporteur” on the situation of human rights in the DPRK is a political plot-breeding tool invented by hostile forces out of their ulterior motive to debase our Republic and to topple our socialist system.
The successive “special rapporteurs” on the human rights situation in the DPRK did nothing, but devised fabrications of distorting true situation of the enjoyment of human rights in our country, and incited an atmosphere of confrontation with the DPRK.
The country-specific “special rapporteur” mechanism under the UNHRC is evoking strong backlash and denunciation from many countries as it is a product of politicisation, selectivity and double standards of human rights, invented by the U.S. and the West, targeting only some independent countries.
Just to name typical examples, Iran, Belarus, Syria, Eritrea, Myanmar and other countries, which are subject to this mechanism, are raising their voices for immediate abolition of this mechanism which severely infringes upon sovereignty of sovereign countries and stokes confrontation and distrust in the field of human rights.
Though the mechanism of Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Human Rights Council that equally treats each UN member state is in place, the U.S. and the West are still insisting on the anachronistic country-specific “special rapporteur” mechanism. This proves that they are using “human rights” as a tool for interfering and pressing other countries.
The post of “special rapporteur” on the human rights situation in the DPRK is nothing but a marionette of the U.S. and the West. We stand firm that we never recognize this post, whoever takes its seat.
Human rights are immediately the national rights. We will never tolerate even the slightest compromise or concession in safeguarding the national rights, and resolutely counter the anti-DPRK “human rights” racket by the hostile forces.
