The Ilhae Farm in Jongju City, North Phyongan Province, enjoys benefits by pushing livestock farming on a constant basis.
“In fact, when we decided to buckle down to livestock farming in earnest, there were many difficult problems. As ours is the flat area and rice-field farming takes the main, it was not easy to provide feed resources,” said Ro Un Nam, chairman of the Management Board of the farm.
But the farm buckled down to it with determination to activate livestock farming and now breeds thousands of domestic animals. A great deal of meat and eggs are now produced there every year.
All domestic animal sheds of the stockbreeding workteam have been built into feed-, manpower- and cost-saving ones.
Pigsty has been renovated into a greenhouse type.
“We generally breed pigs in winter. Much feed is used up since some nutritive substances are consumed to maintain the temperature of body. But breeding pigs in greenhouse sty makes it possible not to increase the amount of feed due to greenhouse effects,” said technical instructor of the stockbreeding workteam.
Workteam No. 2, which is called a combined livestock farm, has a double-storey livestock house, poultry pen and pigsty.
In the pigsty they raise pigs by using native microorganisms.
All the pigs are clean in the pigsty as it was dug to a certain depth and rice hulls are spread on the floor before treating them with native microorganisms.
“In the past, the environment was polluted by the excrement of pigs, which might cause some diseases. But since we started to use native microorganisms, the environment of pigsties has improved while reducing manpower remarkably in breeding pigs and saving water, veterinary medicines and others,” said workteam leader Kim Yong Nam.
Coops are full of chickens, geese and rabbits. In the fish farm using the water flowing nearby different kinds of fish are raised from spring to autumn and their output is great.
Whenever visitors ask the workteam leader how they supply the feed of animals, the workteam leader says that each animal shed and fish pond form the links of the feed production chain.
In other words, the excrement of poultry is treated with bacillus and fed to pigs, untreated excrement is used for the production of feed for fishes and the money earned from fish farming is used to purchase feed additives.
They increase the utilization rate of protein feed by using processing facilities while reducing the consumption level of grain feed.
The feed processing room of the workteam is furnished with different kinds of facilities and the feed storehouse and ensilage tanks are fully packed with nutritious feed.
Fattening sub-workteams of other workteam also raise such fowls as chicken and duck.
And the farm encourages individual livestock farming in families.
“The more efforts we make, the more income we get. As livestock production is on the increase, the farm gets richer and takes on quite new looks,” farmers say.
