Jon Jong Hwan, an 80-year-old coal miner at the Ryongdung Coal Mine, is often asked how he still works at the pit as he did in his youthful days.
Then, he would say with a smile: It is a hard job, but I love it, and I find my worth of life in mining coal.
It is what he says from his heart. To him, coal pit is just like his whole life.
When he started his career 59 years ago, he drilled rock faces, thinking that the country advances as much as he digs. In the days of working as the leader of a coal-mining platoon, he took the lead in tackling difficult and labour-consuming work and led other coal miners by setting practical examples, thus overfulfilling production plans every year.
In recognition of an ordinary coal miner who has displayed patriotic devotion for coal production, even though he may not be seen or appreciated, the state conferred the title of Merited Coal Miner on him and called him to various national conferences and celebration events as a delegate.
In order to repay the love and trust, he has done a lot of work for the coal mine in the past two decades, though he is well over the age of pensioner. And he made his two sons work at the coal mine.
