There is the Songbul Temple with a long history on Mt Jongbang in North Hwanghae Province.
Located at the foot of Chonsong Peak, the main peak of the mountain in Jongbangsan Fort, the temple is one of historical relics showing the medieval architecture.
Built in 898 and rebuilt in the period of Koryo (918-1392), it has six buildings, including Kungnak, Ungjin and Myongbu halls and Chongphung and Sansin pavilions, a five-storey stone pagoda and a monument to the temple.
The Kungnak Hall, the central building of the temple, was destroyed in bombing raids by the US imperialists during the Fatherland Liberation War (June 25 1950-July 27 1953) and restored to its original state in 1955.
The hall is gorgeously painted and the sculptural ornaments are noted as excellent at the door with stamen and pistil patterns, the board put on top of the first cornice on a pillar to hold the beam support and the headpiece.
The Ungjin Hall shows the special features of buildings in the period of Koryo for type of the makeup of the framework in the spacious building, its monolithic ceiling, principal rafters, posts and girders.
In front of the Kungnak Hall stands a stone pagoda built in the period of Koryo. The five-storey pagoda erected on the two-layer pedestal is preserved as a relic of national treasure value as it is simple yet refined in construction method.
The monument to the temple was inscribed in 1727 with a text about the history of the temple–about several rounds of repairs on the temple from the time it was built, the scale of the repairs and the participants in the repairs.
According to the monument, the temple had over 20 buildings, ten-odd hermitages, 15 stone pagodas and over a thousand priests.
The Songbul Temple, a famous temple in the period of Koryo, is under good preservation and its surroundings serve as a resting place and recreation ground.
