October 1 is the International Day of Elder Persons.
The 45th Session of the UN General Assembly held in 1990 adopted the "Resolution on Execution and Activities of the International Action Program for Old People" and decided to commemorate October 1 as the International Day of Elder Persons every year.
The International Day of Elder Persons was instituted to raise the social interest in the aging of population and take socio-economic and health and medical measures for the aged as the ratio of the aging population kept increasing worldwide.
The aging of population is a serious social problem in many countries.
Now one of nine people is over 60 throughout the world and it is estimated that the number will increase to one of five in 2050.
Especially, the aging of population is rapid in Asian countries. The old people over 60 amounted to 549 million in 2017 and they are expected to be increasing to 1,270 million in 2050.
The United Nations calls on all countries not to infringe upon the rights and interests of the old people by organizing various functions on the occasion of the International Day of Elder Persons every year.
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea pays great attention to the care of the aged so that they can lead a happy life in the concluding years of their lives as well and takes legal and institutional measures to give preferential treatment to them.
The "Law of the DPRK on the Care of the Aged" was adopted to provide the aged people with better living conditions.
War veterans' sanatoriums and old people's homes have been wonderfully built in different parts of the country.
It is a firm climate of the society to respect and preferentially treat the aged.
The DPRK will, in the future, too, pay deep attention to the care of the aged and make positive efforts so that the old people can spend their remaining years in greater comfort and happiness.
