The Workers' Party of Korea was founded on October 10, Juche 34(1945).

Since its foundation, the WPK has led the Korean people to victory.

Under the leadership of the WPK, the Korean people achieved victories in the two stages of social revolution and in the Fatherland Liberation War against the armed invasion of the US imperialists and built a socialist state independent in politics, self-supporting in the economy and self-reliant in national defence.

The great leader Kim Il Sung, the founder of the WPK, successfully carried out the democratic reforms after liberation and rallied the popular masses behind the Party to build a new country where the people became masters.

He defeated the formidable imperialist allied forces during the three-year-long Fatherland Liberation War in the 1950s, adding lustre to the dignity and honour of the country.

When the country was turned to ashes without a single brick remaining intact after the war, Kim Il Sung aroused the entire people to rehabilitation and construction with the firm confidence that it is possible to create a new life as long as there are the people, the territory, the Party and the people's government even though the war damages are severe and the situation difficult.

As a result, the Korean people turned out the first molten iron in 40 days after the war and built or rehabilitated hundreds of big and small industrial establishments in the period of the three-year-long postwar rehabilitation and construction.

Under the leadership of the WPK, the Korean people could complete the socialist industrialization in 14 years' time and lay a solid foundation for socialist construction.

True to his intention, the great leader Kim Jong Il further strengthened and developed the WPK into the guiding force of the revolution.

When he started his work at the Party Central Committee on June 19, Juche 53(1964), he regarded it as a fundamental issue of deciding success or failure of the socialist construction to strengthen the Party and enhance its leading role. Under his leadership, a new upsurge was brought about in the party work, politics, military affairs, economy, culture and all other fields.

In the 1990s socialist ruling parties were disrupted one after another and socialism collapsed.

In the mid-1990s Kim Jong Il enforced the original Songun (military-first) politics, frustrating the moves of the imperialists to isolate and stifle the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

He was elected the General Secretary of the WPK on October 8, Juche 86(1997).

Leading the Party, he firmly defended socialism and provided a springboard for building a powerful country.

As it was led by the great Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il, the WPK could display its invincible leading ability for decades.
